What is Stillbirth?

Stillbirth is the loss of a child after the 20th week of pregnancy. Usually it is detected while the mother is carrying the child, but sometimes not until labor or delivery is underway.

What are the causes of stillbirth?

With evaluation, the cause of stillbirth can be found in 40% to 50% of all stillbirths. The causes of stillbirth are put into three categories: birth defects, placenta and umbilical cord problems, and maternal conditions. There are also many rare causes of stillbirth.

What are the statistics of Stillbirth?

Each year in the US about 25,000 babies or 68 babies each day, are born still. That is 1 in every 115 births. Stillbirth is common and can effect anyone. If you have experienced stillbirth, there is a 97% chance that future pregnancies will not end this way.
